A batter hits a home run and trots from home plate, around the bases and finally back to home plate but Richard Albero’s walk is going to take a wee bit longer. Albero, a 65 year old Yankees fan from Florida is walking from home plate at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa to home plate at Yankee Stadium in New York City. What would possess someone to do such a thing? Well…Albero is doing this for charity in honor of his Nephew Gary who lost his life in the horrific 9-11 tragedies. Gary was a die-hard Yankees fan just like his uncle Richard and they used to go to games together. The walking distance from Tampa to NYC is around 1200 miles and Albero plans to name each pair of sneakers he uses after a former Yankee great. Albero, a former Navy Officer himself, is also planning to raise $25,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project during his journey. He plans to walk about 15 to 20 miles daily with family members riding along side him to take care of his food and hotel expenses. If Albero keeps true to his schedule, he should be arriving at the Stadium on Memorial Day just in time to catch the Royals/Yankees game…maybe even throw out the first pitch! I don’t know about you but I think this is one Yankees fan that everyone is rooting for.
